This duty of counsel to research the law is the same prior to plea as at sentence. See § 6.9, supra. It can be extended to the law concerning mandatory immigration consequences of a particular sentence, where the law is one component of a mitigating fact (the immigration disaster that will be triggered by a certain sentence), that can and should be used in an effort to obtain a shorter sentence.
