Asylum applicants are barred if convicted of an aggravated felony[114] or a “particularly serious crime.”[115]  A single misdemeanor is not considered to be a “particularly serious crime,” absent unusual circumstances.[116]  Therefore, reduction of a felony to a misdemeanor would aid the noncitizen in qualifying for asylum.
