It is not just the defendant who suffers.  The innocent family also suffers greatly.  The wife suffers permanent loss of her husband.  The children lose their father’s care and nurturing, as well as his financial support.  The family may lose their house.  Their standard of living will plummet.  The absent spouse or parent cannot even visit.  In the alternative, if the family bonds are paramount, the innocent family is deported along with the defendant.  The spouse may be a United States citizen who has lived all her life in the United States and who does not speak the language of the home country.  The kids have never known another language or country.  All will lose their friends and all the things about the United States they love.
