Some minor offenses, called by names such as “violation” or “infraction,” are so minor that no jail may be imposed as a sentence, and a defendant charged with such an offense therefore does not have a right to jury trial or appointed counsel.  Under some procedures, the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard is inapplicable.  Certain of these convictions are not considered convictions for crimes under immigration law.  See § 4.9, supra.
