The approach is chronological, beginning with the reasons why criminal defense counsel must attempt to protect their noncitizen clients against adverse immigration consequences, Chapter 2, infra, and moving through investigation, the possible need for language interpretation, the development of a joint criminal-immigration strategy, detention issues, the definition of conviction, plea, sentence, and post-conviction relief. The separate question of juvenile proceedings is covered in Chapter 12, infra.
