An aggravated felony conviction triggers many specific immigration consequences for a noncitizen. See Chapter 2, infra. Among them, it triggers deportation, see § 1.6, infra, disqualifies the noncitizen from most kinds of relief from immigration consequences in immigration court, see § 1.7, infra, forfeits many procedural rights and advantages for a noncitizen before the government, see § 1.8, infra, and greatly increases the sentences for the federal offense of illegal re-entry after deportation after having suffered an aggravated felony conviction. See § 1.9, infra.
