(A) A criminal lawyer or defendant consults immigration counsel before conviction and seeks (a) to learn the exact immigration consequences of a conviction of a charged offense or proposed disposition, of which deportability is often the most critical, and (b) if the proposed plea triggers deportation, to learn what other dispositions or offenses of conviction will avoid deportability. See § 1.5, infra.
