The development of a strategy for the defense of a criminal case involving a noncitizen defendant is accomplished by (1) creating a chronology of the critical immigration and criminal history dates on which important events occurred, see § 5.17, infra, analyzing the client’s immigration situation at each point in time to discover the immigration damage caused by each signficant criminal event, see § 5.18, infra, discovering a solution to each problem, see § 5.19, infra, and evaluating the chances of success in obtaining the solution to each problem. See § 5.20, infra.
